A field guide to your people

This is us. There’s room for you.

Serious about computing.
Unreasonably good company.

01 /Our people

Not just a
department.
Your people.

We’re the Computer Science Society at KNUST. A student-led community for Computer Science and Information Technology, rooted in the Department of Computer Science, College of Science. Different interests. Different starting points. A shared place to learn, build, and belong.

First programme or final project. Quiet thinker or serial side-project starter. You bring the curiosity. We’ll bring the company.

02 / Shared starting pointsPlenty of possibilities.

02 /The way we work

Nobody
debugs alone.

Collaboration over competition.
Because the bug doesn’t care
who gets the credit.

A participant discussing ideas with a student team
A good question starts a conversation.
01 /

Knowledge travels.

Gatekeeping? Not our department.

A stubborn bug, a useful study resource, a better design pattern. We share what we learn through peer tutorials, group repositories, and community conversations. Your breakthrough might be someone else’s starting point.

02 /

Someone’s been there.

Senior students. Not final bosses.

Senior cohorts help newer students find their footing. From study spaces and code reviews to résumé clinics and alumni career webinars, mentorship makes the journey a little less mysterious.

03 /

Curiosity gets company.

The lecture slides are a starting point.

A new language, an unfamiliar framework, a local problem worth solving. Bring the question. Find the people. Explore it together. You don’t need to have it all figured out to get started.

03 /Two disciplines. One community.

Different paths.
Shared possibilities.

One foundation in computing and mathematics.
Two ways to shape what comes next.

The people who help you go further

Good questions deserve good guidance.

CSS works alongside the department’s lecturers and academic staff: researchers, industry advisors, and mentors. Beyond the curriculum, their guidance supports student-led research and departmental projects, with office-hour conversations that can turn a question into a direction.

Seven cohorts.
Zero dull moments.

CS1

Hello, world.

Fresh arrivals. High optimism. Still under the impression that syntax errors are the hardest part. We’ll let them enjoy that for now.

~520students

IT1

Have USB. Will troubleshoot.

Armed with bootable drives and ready to reconfigure your home router. Whether you asked or not.

~280students

CS2

Character development.

Data structures have entered the chat. Pointers point nowhere. Recursion has no intention of stopping. Resilience is loading.

~419students

IT2

Lost packets. Found purpose.

Deep into subnetting and IP routing, with increasingly philosophical thoughts about packet loss.

~317students

CS3

Powered by deadlines.

Instant coffee, Stack Overflow, and the collective adrenaline of third-year project submissions. Somehow, it ships.

~645students

IT3

It works in my container.

Virtual machines and Docker containers feel like home. Complex system designs? Also home. A slightly busy home.

~395students

CS4

One last integration test.

Experienced seniors, final projects, and a very sincere hope that the demo behaves during the defence.

~655students

CS has four current year groups; IT has three. The next IT fourth-year cohort is still ahead of us.

05 /Beyond the lecture slides

Less ‘what if’.
More ‘look at this’.

Confidence comes from trying.
And occasionally trying again.
That’s where we come in.

Subject clinics & tutorials

A difficult module is a team sport.

Code Quest & Code Fest

Big ideas. Very little sleep.

24-to-48-hour development sprints and hackathons where teams turn practical local challenges into working solutions.

Workshops & bootcamps

Less ‘next slide’. More ‘try this’.

Hands-on learning beyond the standard curriculum: full-stack development, Flutter, Docker, and foundational cybersecurity.

A balanced engineer is a better engineer. CSS Games brings the cohorts together for football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, and indoor games. Football is the main attraction: win the football tournament, take the CSS Games title. Collaboration over competition has one very lively exception.
